Nia Technologies Inc. is a Canadian non-profit social enterprise whose mission is to discover, develop, and deploy innovative technologies that will improve lives in low-income countries. We are based in Toronto, Canada, with partners across the globe.
We imagine a world where innovation, developed in collaboration with partners and local communities, enables individuals to overcome barriers, challenge negative attitudes, and realize their potential.
Nia grew from an idea hatched in 2013 by cbm Canada and CoRSU Rehabilitation Hospital in Uganda — to use 3D printing to speed up mobility device production with existing orthopaedic personnel. The idea was realized with research by the University of Toronto and Autodesk Research and made possible with funding from cbm Canada, Grand Challenges Canada, Stronger Philanthropy, and others. Nia Technologies Inc. was then created to develop and deploy innovation for a higher purpose — to help improve lives in low-income countries.
Research and Development
Rigorous research and testing are at the core of our work
Potential to increase access to mobility devices for people with disabilities
To help reduce the burden of lower limb amputee disease and related health conditions
Potential gain of up to 333% in orthopaedic workshops
Orthopaedic clinicians will develop expertise and skills in 3D scanning, modelling, and printing
Reduces the need to use fabrication equipment, such as ovens and grinders, driving down the risk of workplace injuries
With 3D PrintAbility, a patient can be fitted and discharged within one overnight stay
The passion behind Nia is driven by researchers, engineers, development workers, clinicians, business advisors, and many other talented people. The work we do is made possible with the generous support of our funders.
